What I Wear Where!
Recently we went to dinner with some friends that I am crazy about. The biggest problem we have is that we don’t see enough of each other! It seems like there is never enough time! I was sitting on the couch chatting with the hostess when all of a sudden, all I could think of was ‘Oh No!!’ I am wearing the same thing I wore last time we were here!! Exactly the same thing!
You see just the week before, I was meeting with a New Client, Sandra. She was new to me….and to Doncaster. She bought a dress and as she was trying it on we were talking ‘Fashionista Speak’…you know what that is right?!
Where she will wear her new dress, what shoes she will wear with it, where she is going wearing her new dress….etc. Sandra asked me/told me that she keeps a note of what she wears to which event and she asked me if I did that. I assured her that I work hard to pay close attention to what I wear, but I haven’t actually gotten around to making notes. So imagine my surprise, when I found myself in that very same situation….within the week!!! ‘Oh No!’
I guess I will have to start making notes for myself! Clearly the old habit of ‘thinking about it’ isn’t working so well for me anymore. So I reached out to her again…so, Sandra, how do you do that?! Where and how do you keep your Fashion Diary, I asked? It has to be simple. It has to be accurate. And it has to be easy to see and, therefore, to actually use! I found an old diary sort of thing I have never used….that is pretty (very important) and small-ish, also important….and I have found a perfect spot front and center in my closet! I got it all set this weekend, and already I feel so well organized!
I have decided to call it ‘What I Wear Where’! Cute isn’t it!?! Actually it is perfect timing! For the next few weeks I am happy to say that I have places to go and things to do! Everything should be much easier for me if I can quickly look up what I wore there last time I went there!
Try it. Maybe this little tip will help you to navigate your closet more effectively. We want to wear more of the clothes we already have, so that when the New Collection (Doncaster Spring 2018) becomes available we will be ready for some pretty, new, things!!
Last week I had a Fashion Emergency! Oh No!
I decided one day to take my own advice and wear some of the black pants that are just hanging in my closet but that I haven’t worn for ages. I decided to go for my Favorite Old pants from last year. They were my Favorites!! I put them on, I easily zipped them up (Yeah!) put on a New black top and I’m off! Or so I thought!! By the time I finished my cereal, I was fidgeting and so uncomfortable! Why? I asked myself? These pants were front zip, black knit, trim….but not skinny….and I still loved the fabric. So where did I go wrong!?!
Remember, these pants were favorites, so I was determined to keep trying to identify the problem! Maybe it isn’t the pants….maybe it’s the top? Because the top was new, I had not worn them together. Ok….I’ll change my top. that’s easy enough! So I put on another top….and alas….still not right. This time my bra straps were right there!! So, still not willing to concede that this is what happens when we try to make our favorite old things work year after year. Is it just because the styles have changed? They haven’t really changed that much….trim pants or fuller legs?? It’s pretty much your choice. In 2017 pretty much anything goes! So all right…..I’ll try one more thing…..I ended up with a white blouse, untucked, and a new cashmere cardigan with all kinds of pattern! Success!! (Thank heavens!) I felt like I could conquer my day!
So, the real learning in this little exercise? I was really irritated! If I hadn’t persevered I would have been fussy and uncomfortable all day long! And, so, it would have been so difficult to do all the things I wanted to do that day. The other thing was that it took me a really long time!! I was way behind by the time I felt like I could walk out the door! And, finally, I realized I have clients that go thru this all the time….I’m sure!! So how can I help them!?!
WEAR THEM IN GOOD HEALTH….AND WEAR THEM OFTEN! BBD
Most of you will be very familiar with that phrase by now. We really should not keep things in our closet, to look at every day, that we do not and are not going to wear! We have enough decisions to make first thing in the morning besides mentally sort thru a closet full of clothes that we are not going to wear!! They are too small, they are too big, they are too old, and they just don’t work any more. But if they stay in the closet we have to look at them every day and consider putting them on….just because they are there.
We are important women (and men too!). We have places to go and things to do. Let’s decide to sort thru all the things in our closets and remove the things that just aren’t right for us anymore. Give them to an organization that will distribute them to people that really need them! And then we will feel better….and be able to accomplish even MORE….and the recipients, too, will be able to THRIVE!
What a wonderful time of the year it is!?
Let’s be grateful for the life we have! For the difference we make in the cities that we live in and the wonderful opportunities that come our way! Thank you all for all the ways you impact our world today!
This time I am going to share some of MY inspirations!
Nobody is asking any one of us to be Perfect!
What ever size we wear ….. we’re good! We can do a lot! Do not let your size define you!
And then, there is this one!
Happy Thanksgiving from our house to yours!!
It has been an amazing few weeks here in Milwaukee! It seems anyone that has a cause they are passionate about is having an event….some kind of event…..to share with their friends in town this week. They are all terrific causes, and they are causes that are championed by some Wonderful Women…and Men!
The week began with the Johnson Bank Financial Team sponsoring Andy Olen author of The Trilogy of YES! Andy maintains that if you want to grow your business success will come in 3 parts…..Connect, Communicate & Cooperate with the client. It’s like a 3 legged stool…we must think of them all together or we will be off balance and Fail. This last week I have been Connecting with old friends….and NEW! Now the challenge will be to Communicate with them, and tell them about what I do! And then, I will need to Cooperate with them and my company to accommodate their needs in a way that works for them! Not always easy to do!
The Women’s Fund of Greater Milwaukee sponsored a celebration of the 45th Anniversary of Title IX. When Title IX became law in 1972 it mandated inclusive opportunities for all…Men and Women. While life in 2017 is much more inclusive than it was in 1972, it isn’t where it should be. For example, do you know that in Girls Athletics, still…. while they do have an audience….the price of admission to the game is a fraction of the price per ticket as to the Boys games….and … generally, maybe not always, the concession stand is NOT OPEN…and Hot dogs and Coke are not available for sale at the Girls’ games! What??!!
Alverno College held a seminar featuring some very successful women in business in Milwaukee. The advice they shared was this…Be Open To Growth! Make it a habit to say YES! Thank you! I would love to….and see where it takes you! The practice of business in 2017 is very different than it was in 1972. The young women today will have to find their own way if they are aspiring to have a career in the C Suite!
Confidence and Leadership are muscles…you learn to use them, or you learn Not To!
And, last but not least….Planned Parenthood. It is a cause that my husband and I are passionate about. We are proud of the way young women are stepping up to leadership positions of PP today are poised to make important contributions to the advocacy of safe, inclusive health care….for men and women. Female healthcare, its policies and practices, are no place for politics. Period.
So, here I am, at the end of the week feeling beyond proud of the accomplishments of the women of my city! They are smart, capable & successful. They are leaders in businesses of all kinds….and they are changing lives of all the people of our city in many ways…everyday.
We are role models and mentors for the young women who are coming up behind us. Whether we realize it or not, the girls coming up behind us are watching us! So, let’s make it a point to do ourselves proud. Let’s be women that Get Up. Dress Up. & Show Up! And…let’s be sure we LOOK the part!
The Girls have their work cut out for them! Nothing is the same as it was in 1972! They will have to forge a new path…use new & different skills. They will have a much better chance to be successful if they forge their path….Well Dressed!
Let’s show the girls coming up behind us that we respect ourselves and each other. Let’s resolve to Dress Well!
Finally….I’m coming up for air! SHOWTIME! was wildly successful! Thank you to everyone for making the time to come and see me and what’s new! Today is one of the very few days we have had that it is really beginning to feel like Fall/Winter 2017 is upon us!
I was so surprised when one of my clients appeared….someone I had not seen in a long time! It seems she has a new job….which is great news! It’s all good! The surprise was that she really got me going….she was confident that she would be able to convince me that it is ok that she “dress down” for her new position, because everyone else does!
Can you believe that!?!
Of course, I think you all know that my response was….No, It Isn’t!
We all should have a closet that is filled with clothes that we can wear now, and that we Want to Wear Now, to all the places we go. Our clothes need to be clean and stylish, and fit properly, and take us to the places we go to. It is NOT good enough to have a bunch of clothes that are old, are uncomfortable and make us feel old & stodgy. Maybe that is because of the fit, maybe it is because of the fabrication of the garment. Inexpensive clothes, purchased several years ago, (or more) will not serve you well. You need to have looks that are comfortable….great fabrics that take you to the grocery store, to the office, to the luncheon event, the teachers conference…..clothes that you can stay in to fix dinner & help with homework….have a drink with your husband….and eat dinner with your family! We are women that have a lot to do and a lot of places to go to each, and every day. We need Great Clothes that will take us to all those places…every day! We do Not need to wear clothes that don’t make us feel good! Life is way too short for that!
What we do not need, is tired old clothes that itch, make us get hot and sweaty, cranky and irritable! Clothes that no matter where we are going they are Not even comfortable enough to wear…all day long! And whatever you do….
Don’t Dress Down!
Please, people….do your self a favor….Dress Like You Mean It!! You will notice that people will pay more attention to you….and to what you say!
Dress Well. Wear Doncaster! You will be glad you did! For Pete’s Sake…don’t Dress Down!

I recently had a conversation with a woman about her clothes…what she likes and what she hates!
It seems that one thing she hates is short sleeves. Sleeves that stop anywhere above her elbow/forearm it would seem. She even got stuck on what kind of finishing the sleeve has!! I can’t stop thinking about this conversation! Most women, any size, resist wearing sleeveless looks, for a variety of reasons. Personally I believe that if you occasionally bare your arms, maybe use a bit of self tanner (all year long!) most of us have arms that are ok. Maybe not perfect, but fine. I figure I am a big woman…why would I think that anybody would expect me to have thin arms?! Sometimes it is just too warm, for me, to wear a jacket…so I have to go sleeveless.
So I was wearing a short sleeve t-shirt the other day. I’ll admit that the sleeves were a little short, I know my friend would Never wear this t-shirt! Just then I was looking at a magazine and I noticed a really pretty white, lace, blouse and what I noticed was that I liked the sleeve, which was a little longer than I would ordinarily choose….for myself or for a client…at almost elbow length. But…I liked it. I think I would try it…and I know I would recommend it to a client! So it made me think…Why do we get so stuck on what we like and don’t like?
Then I saw something else I liked…
Fashion….covering the problem doesn’t cure the problem, or make it go away.
Instead, try to solve the problem by accentuating the positive!
As a stylist, it is my job to encourage you to Embrace the Positive! Accentuate the Positive… after all! But, also, to try some new things! Because you just might like it…after all! Don’t stamp your foot and say NO! I Won’t Do That! I don’t like that! I Never wear Brown!! Be a little bit adventuresome….and try something new…at least consider something new. You might be really surprised! If you are having trouble finding some looks that are new for you and yet somehow intriguing….come see me! Showtime! is coming up! It’s the perfect time to try some new things!!
Be the star of your own life!
And…Curves are a good thing! Embrace them!
So, back to the sleeve situation….I guess there isn’t really a good or bad sleeve length. It really depends on how you see the sleeve situation…as it relates to you! But I do have to encourage you to try something new! You might be surprised…in a good way!!

I hope to see YOU!
It’s time to have a Mission to Transition our closets to prepare for Fall…for real! I decided this morning…it’s about that time…for me to transition my own closet to Fall! It’s time to clean out the closet….re examine the black pants…spruce up my look for Fall! I’m on it!
As I look over my closet (specifically, black pants!) I notice that some of those pants I have had for awhile now. They look really different from the pants I have bought recently. Hmmm…..they might not make the cut!?
Be particular! Be relentless! Don’t keep them just because at some point you Had to have them, so you bought them!
If you have trouble separating from your old clothes…think of it this way. Share them with people who don’t have any black pants…and need some! Some ideas for repurposing your old things?? Goodwill, your church, a charity in your area, maybe?? They will love to have them!! Your cast offs are likely to be Life Changing for Someone!
I want to take a minute and share just some of the great notes I have recently received! They motivated me to transition to Fall, maybe they will help you to adopt the Mission to Transition!?!
…..I looked thru closets and found several black sweaters and a nice silk jersey turtleneck, so have black. (I also cleaned out all my closets and feel just great and in control)😷. Thurs. I am devoting the day to trying on ALL my pants and eliminating any that don’t fit right.
I truely feel good. MS
….I wore my new dress to the opening cocktail party at (the club) Saturday night. It was such a treat to wear – so great looking and as comfortable as a bathrobe! I got many compliments, including one from a most attractive young woman who said she was taking note of the best looking dresses at the party and mine was in the top 10😀 Thank you Barbara!…..SU

Save some time to come and see me and what’s new!
It happened to me last week.
I was trying to do everything!! At once!! To get caught up…and to get ahead!! And the week was speeding by! And everything seemed to be happening at once! And all of a sudden it was Thursday!! The week was almost over!
I was so upset!! All night!! What should I wear!? To do all these different things I had scheduled!! This one is at the cleaners, this one needs to go to the cleaners!! Yikes!!! What to do!?!?! How will I do it all!?! I could wear this one….nope maybe that one…!?! And finally I fell asleep!
I got up on Friday morning bright and early. I showered, did my exercises and decided to quickly check my email before I got dressed…just to make sure I still had to Everything!
The first email I saw, was my client saying she didn’t need her new things today….it’s summer vacation!! Relax and come when you can! It’s no problem, I’m around! Hmmm……I thought. And the very next email I opened was from my good friend Meg Daly! She is a Personal Coach and always has valuable pearls of wisdom to share! Her advice to the Universe that day?? It was to ask the question….Are you making your life overly complicated!!?? Yes, I am!!! Oh No!!
So, I changed the date with my client. I went to the gym and my trainer. I came home and changed my clothes. Then I went to hostess (with an old friend and a new friend!) an important luncheon event. Then I came home, for a minute, and Harry and I went out to dinner with some friends! Phew it was a busy day! But I lived thru it!!
And I lived thru it, well dressed!! Thank heavens for my Doncaster clothes! They take me to the places I go!! I went every where (accept to the trainer…and on some days I even go there!) dressed in Doncaster….LOVE the Miracle Pants!
The learning? Dress Well! You never know where your day will take you…and who you will meet. And…Stop…just for a minute…to listen to the Universe! There is every chance that some one , some where out there, is looking out for you, after all.
Today is a Good Day for a Good Day!
