Changing times….it is so hard for us….in many ways! We can get so stuck in a look that it becomes very difficult for us to say OK, OK! I’ll try something different!!
Recently I had lunch with a friend who has had some pretty dramatic changes in her life recently…..she is quite a bit smaller than she was the last time I saw her (good for her!) But the thing that was most interesting was that she was wearing a Very Different Look! She was wearing pants, jeans even!! She looked beautiful….but so different….that I couldn’t take my eyes off her! I was stunned!
As we pursued this conversation about how different her look is today than it was 6 months ago it was so interesting! I learned that not only has her size changed, but the places she goes to have changed up quite a bit also. This woman has a busy life, so it is very important that she has a closet that works for her…. a wardrobe that takes her to a variety of places every day. Between the life pattern changes and the size change, she some how found the courage to try some new things!!! Like wearing pants! Jeans even!
It is really hard for most of us to try new things….whether they are new habits, or clothes, or a new school for the children, or a new business for Dad?? Or to send our children off to nursery school, first grade or college even! Anyone of these changes will send our lives into a very different path….which then will nudge us to try something we didn’t even think of before. As women, when someone/something in our family changes, so does our routine, a new school schedule for example….our schedule changes also. Maybe we aren’t going to the gym 3 days a week any more….or maybe we will start going more often now!?! Any of these changes will push us to try something new….maybe even a new wardrobe!?!
While we were talking about her new life the other day, it made me think that so many people I know….and I got to thinking about how hard it is for some people to change up their look. It has been a Very Long Time for lots of them!! Give yourself a push to try something new! Anything new!! A new book/author….even a new restaurant, even better if it’s in a new part of town….for you! Do you always wear pants?? Try a skirt!…?? Why?? Just because…
Being able to adapt to new things is the thing that will keep us young….at least keep us young at heart! Over the years, I have noticed that as we age, we make our lives smaller and smaller slowly, one day at a time and pretty soon our life gets very small….we don’t go to the same places….or do the same things….even with our good old friends. It’s hard to change our ways. Let’s not be that woman! Let’s commit to each other that we will try new things….and go to new places….when we can and maybe along the way we will make some new friends.
Just one more thing! It’s so important! If you do decide to try something new, give yourself permission to make a mistake!! For Pete’s Sake!! You might find that when you actually try it….you might not like it!! Maybe, if you Always wear black pants, you will consider wearing jeans….but if they don’t work out for you the way you hoped they would, put them right into the Goodwill bag! Don’t fret about that! Just move on to the next thing! It will most likely work out!
Girls Scout Motto: Make new friends, but keep the old,
One is silver and the other gold!
P.S. Just after I wrote this the other day, I snuck out to the movies: A Star is Born. If you haven’t seen it, please put it on your radar! I loved it!! I think this is a movie we want to see in the theatre because the sound is amazing! These are the lyrics from the first big number that Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga sing on stage!!!
Maybe it’s time to let the old ways die, Maybe it’s time to let the old ways die
It takes a lot to change a man,
Hell, it takes a lot to try… Maybe it’s time…
What about you??? Is it time to try something new…?!

It’s Fall! Actually, it is getting cold like Winter (brrrrr)….and I am still sorting thru my closet! That tells you how behind I am this year!
Do you find yourself standing in your closet….hopelessly staring at the black pants…..trying your best to decide what you are going to wear today!?! I bet you do….because that’s just what has been happening to me! I have to say, I think that GREAT black pants are a staple of a well curated closet!! If they are not GREAT, then you don’t need them. Our lives are too important for us to settle for old, tired, stretched out black bottoms/jeans! We deserve better than that! We can’t be the best we can be…if we won’t be good to ourselves….which includes creating a closet that works for us! It is so important!
So I have some suggestions. Start by going thru your closet and pulling out the things you loved wearing in the summer, even the early Fall. If you can’t, actually, part with them, find another closet somewhere that you don’t have to look at them everyday. That way next year when you are looking for some more colorful clothes you will begin by shopping in your closet! We all like that! Remove the short sleeve and sleeveless blouse/tops also. It’s likely that you won’t go to those now that it is getting colder outside….even if you think you might….take them out of your closet and put them with your other things for Spring.
Slowly you will notice that you can actually see what is left…..so that you can make a better decision about what you really want to keep and, actually, Wear! When you can actually take a good look at what is left in there, you will get a much better idea of what you want to add to your closet for this current season. For example, I need some cardigan sweaters with out a lot of wool in them. I’ve been noticing (and hearing from You) that a higher wool content make me itch like crazy! I hate that! So I’m getting much more conscious of fabric content than I was when I was younger!
Now for the denim and/or black pants. Pull out 3 pairs of black pants that you can’t remember when you wore them last, hang them right up in front of you, so you can’t avoid looking at them. Make it a point to try them on and actually Wear Them! Take note during the day….How do they feel? How do they Fit? Are they the length you like? Are they “sans stains”? If they are, and you felt good in them all day long, Yeah!, then when you take them off, put them directly into the bag to go to the cleaners, so you can get them back and Wear Them! I predict that by the time you have finished your morning coffee, you will think “Yeah! I Love these pants! I’m so glad that I found them!” Or, you will decide right away that they aren’t good enough….they are too short, or long….the fabric is old and uncomfortable, the legs are too baggy, or too skinny!! Styles change, and we become so used to a certain look sometimes we forget that! Getting dressed in the morning should be FUN! Not a nightmare!
The Chinese have a saying that goes something like this……
When sleeping women wake they move mountains.
My guess is that when you get up, and embrace your day wearing pants/clothes you love….you will move the mountains that might stand in your way!
Be good to yourself, and try something new. I think you will be glad you did!

But I believed her and found myself riveted to the TV last week. I couldn’t turn away. Is it possible that she is lying to all of us?
I don’t think so.
Dr. Christine Blasey Ford seems like a woman I would like to know. I found her to be engaging, smart, honest, thoughtful, well dressed, credible … and terrified all at the same time. I can’t imagine how brave she must be. I don’t think I know many people that are that brave. She is standing front and center and trying to express her deepest secrets & worst fears, telling a secret that she has held close to her heart for 36 years essentially, to the whole world.
But, I don’t know Bret Kavanagh either. It seems he has had an illustrious career. And I wasn’t there at the party that night 36 years ago. Did I make some stupid mistakes “back in the day”? It kills me to admit it….but, the short answer, is Yes. Would I want Senator Grassley to interrogate me, in front of the whole world, for a moment to moment account of what happened….and where….and by who, such a very long time ago?? The short answer is No! And yet…..I believe that in this country, and at this time, we are supposed to be considered innocent until we are proven to be guilty.
Hmmm……so what to do? Since both Dr. Ford and Sen. Kavanagh steadfastly insist that they are each 100% certain of the facts as they recall them…..one of them must be lying….but which one?
So, I think just now I might have found a solution….I think the answer might be to nominate Dr. Christine Blasey Ford for the vacant Supreme Court position. She was calm, cool and collected, and articulate…under the most difficult of circumstances. And, after all, isn’t that just what we want in a Supreme Court Justice?? Even though it would mean leaving one career to begin another….maybe that is just what we need right now?
And yet, nevertheless she persisted.

Try it! Make it a point to try something new to you….each day!
Today was the day for me! I had some errands to do at the Mall. It’s about a 1/2 hour away from me, so I try to plan my visits out there carefully. Besides …. I Hate going to the Mall. But, I decided to say Yes to the adventure and just do it! And, I’m so glad that I did!
The first thing I did was to return some shoes to Nordstrom. I pulled up to the area and I noticed there was a sign right in front of me that said I could text the store and someone would come out to my car to pick up my returns. I had never done that before. But, I thought…I’m going to try this. And it was that good! I saved some steps….and some energy…..and it was EASY! So I was starting to feel really good!
So, then I was feeling very brave….and decided to drive around to the other end of the Mall…and because I was in a different place than usual, I took a different route. I think it was because of that that I found the perfect parking spot for the things I wanted to do. Yeah! I am never that lucky! 🙂 As I entered the Mall, in a different location than usual, I walked right by Panera….I love cheesy bread at Panera! So I went to do my errands…..and as I was leaving…..I decided to stop and get some cheesy bread to take home! Yeah!!
By now I was feeling good and very brave!! So when I passed by Five Guys…by now it was getting to be lunchtime….I decided to stop by and have a burger and fries. Five Guys came to Milwaukee YEARS ago….and I haven’t been there since it first opened….so I decided to take the plunge and try it again. Guess What?!? I liked it! Especially the fries!! When I finished eating lunch I went to one more place….Talbots. It just so happened that they were have a great sale….I think almost everything I bought was on sale….about 90% off!! Since Doncaster died I was in serious need of some new clothes….and they were exactly the right price!! How could I resist?!?
It was a great day! I’m so glad I went….and so glad that I did some things in a new (to me!) way! It made me feel really good! Empowered even! I got my errands done in a timely fashion….I bought some foods that Harry and I love but hardly ever actually eat….and I even got some new clothes to perk up my closet. All in all it was a great day!
When was the last time you tried something new?? Can you even remember when it was? Try it! When the occasion presents itself think about my day…..think about how great I felt at the end of the day….how empowered I felt just because I did a few “usual” things a little differently than I usually do them.
Think of it this way…..Today is a Good Day for a Good Day!

I hear it all the time!
Is it OK to wear Black in August?? Is it OK to wear White after Labor Day?? What is a girl to do??
The short answer is YES!! To both queries!
Just recently we have attended 2 funerals, never a happy thought. As we were preparing to make the trips to these events I had the same old problem….what should I wear? Do I really have to wear Black to a funeral these days?? I think not! Does Harry really have to wear a dark suit?? Probably not! But, on the other hand I have a great Black dress that I love, so why not wear it? Then Harry decided to wear his dark suit after all, even tho it was supposed to be about 100 degrees that day!
So, we both dressed like we were taught to, and we both wore dark clothes to the funeral….both of them. And…it’s a good thing. Because at both events, everyone, pretty much Everyone…..was wearing Black! I feel compelled to mention this because I would have told you that these days, it really doesn’t matter so much what you wear….we are just happy that you get to where you are going. But, I was wrong! Definitely! So, if you have an occasion to wear a little black dress….embrace it, and wear it! No matter the temperature outside. I am confident at the end of the day you will be able to say….I am so glad that I took her advice and I wore my black dress today! It was the perfect thing…..and I wore it everywhere I went, all day long!
As for the white after Labor Day??? Again, the short answer is YES! Altho there is a BIG BUT…! They must be stain free and relatively new white pants! Think about this…..your favorite white pants, and your favorite black top and a fabulous necklace? Or your favorite black pants that you haven’t worn in a while and a GREAT, new, beautiful, white blouse. It’s a great look…for pretty everyone and for pretty much anywhere.
Black & White is still probably the most used …. and most comfortable look for any season, but especially for in between seasons….wherever you live!
