It has been an amazing few weeks here in Milwaukee! It seems anyone that has a cause they are passionate about is having an event….some kind of event…..to share with their friends in town this week. They are all terrific causes, and they are causes that are championed by some Wonderful Women…and Men!
The week began with the Johnson Bank Financial Team sponsoring Andy Olen author of The Trilogy of YES! Andy maintains that if you want to grow your business success will come in 3 parts…..Connect, Communicate & Cooperate with the client. It’s like a 3 legged stool…we must think of them all together or we will be off balance and Fail. This last week I have been Connecting with old friends….and NEW! Now the challenge will be to Communicate with them, and tell them about what I do! And then, I will need to Cooperate with them and my company to accommodate their needs in a way that works for them! Not always easy to do!
The Women’s Fund of Greater Milwaukee sponsored a celebration of the 45th Anniversary of Title IX. When Title IX became law in 1972 it mandated inclusive opportunities for all…Men and Women. While life in 2017 is much more inclusive than it was in 1972, it isn’t where it should be. For example, do you know that in Girls Athletics, still…. while they do have an audience….the price of admission to the game is a fraction of the price per ticket as to the Boys games….and … generally, maybe not always, the concession stand is NOT OPEN…and Hot dogs and Coke are not available for sale at the Girls’ games! What??!!
Alverno College held a seminar featuring some very successful women in business in Milwaukee. The advice they shared was this…Be Open To Growth! Make it a habit to say YES! Thank you! I would love to….and see where it takes you! The practice of business in 2017 is very different than it was in 1972. The young women today will have to find their own way if they are aspiring to have a career in the C Suite!
Confidence and Leadership are muscles…you learn to use them, or you learn Not To!
And, last but not least….Planned Parenthood. It is a cause that my husband and I are passionate about. We are proud of the way young women are stepping up to leadership positions of PP today are poised to make important contributions to the advocacy of safe, inclusive health care….for men and women. Female healthcare, its policies and practices, are no place for politics. Period.
So, here I am, at the end of the week feeling beyond proud of the accomplishments of the women of my city! They are smart, capable & successful. They are leaders in businesses of all kinds….and they are changing lives of all the people of our city in many ways…everyday.
We are role models and mentors for the young women who are coming up behind us. Whether we realize it or not, the girls coming up behind us are watching us! So, let’s make it a point to do ourselves proud. Let’s be women that Get Up. Dress Up. & Show Up! And…let’s be sure we LOOK the part!
The Girls have their work cut out for them! Nothing is the same as it was in 1972! They will have to forge a new path…use new & different skills. They will have a much better chance to be successful if they forge their path….Well Dressed!
Let’s show the girls coming up behind us that we respect ourselves and each other. Let’s resolve to Dress Well!
Finally….I’m coming up for air! SHOWTIME! was wildly successful! Thank you to everyone for making the time to come and see me and what’s new! Today is one of the very few days we have had that it is really beginning to feel like Fall/Winter 2017 is upon us!
I was so surprised when one of my clients appeared….someone I had not seen in a long time! It seems she has a new job….which is great news! It’s all good! The surprise was that she really got me going….she was confident that she would be able to convince me that it is ok that she “dress down” for her new position, because everyone else does!
Can you believe that!?!
Of course, I think you all know that my response was….No, It Isn’t!
We all should have a closet that is filled with clothes that we can wear now, and that we Want to Wear Now, to all the places we go. Our clothes need to be clean and stylish, and fit properly, and take us to the places we go to. It is NOT good enough to have a bunch of clothes that are old, are uncomfortable and make us feel old & stodgy. Maybe that is because of the fit, maybe it is because of the fabrication of the garment. Inexpensive clothes, purchased several years ago, (or more) will not serve you well. You need to have looks that are comfortable….great fabrics that take you to the grocery store, to the office, to the luncheon event, the teachers conference…..clothes that you can stay in to fix dinner & help with homework….have a drink with your husband….and eat dinner with your family! We are women that have a lot to do and a lot of places to go to each, and every day. We need Great Clothes that will take us to all those places…every day! We do Not need to wear clothes that don’t make us feel good! Life is way too short for that!
What we do not need, is tired old clothes that itch, make us get hot and sweaty, cranky and irritable! Clothes that no matter where we are going they are Not even comfortable enough to wear…all day long! And whatever you do….
Don’t Dress Down!
Please, people….do your self a favor….Dress Like You Mean It!! You will notice that people will pay more attention to you….and to what you say!
Dress Well. Wear Doncaster! You will be glad you did! For Pete’s Sake…don’t Dress Down!
I recently had a conversation with a woman about her clothes…what she likes and what she hates!
It seems that one thing she hates is short sleeves. Sleeves that stop anywhere above her elbow/forearm it would seem. She even got stuck on what kind of finishing the sleeve has!! I can’t stop thinking about this conversation! Most women, any size, resist wearing sleeveless looks, for a variety of reasons. Personally I believe that if you occasionally bare your arms, maybe use a bit of self tanner (all year long!) most of us have arms that are ok. Maybe not perfect, but fine. I figure I am a big woman…why would I think that anybody would expect me to have thin arms?! Sometimes it is just too warm, for me, to wear a jacket…so I have to go sleeveless.
So I was wearing a short sleeve t-shirt the other day. I’ll admit that the sleeves were a little short, I know my friend would Never wear this t-shirt! Just then I was looking at a magazine and I noticed a really pretty white, lace, blouse and what I noticed was that I liked the sleeve, which was a little longer than I would ordinarily choose….for myself or for a client…at almost elbow length. But…I liked it. I think I would try it…and I know I would recommend it to a client! So it made me think…Why do we get so stuck on what we like and don’t like?
Then I saw something else I liked…
Fashion….covering the problem doesn’t cure the problem, or make it go away.
Instead, try to solve the problem by accentuating the positive!
As a stylist, it is my job to encourage you to Embrace the Positive! Accentuate the Positive… after all! But, also, to try some new things! Because you just might like it…after all! Don’t stamp your foot and say NO! I Won’t Do That! I don’t like that! I Never wear Brown!! Be a little bit adventuresome….and try something new…at least consider something new. You might be really surprised! If you are having trouble finding some looks that are new for you and yet somehow intriguing….come see me! Showtime! is coming up! It’s the perfect time to try some new things!!
Be the star of your own life!
And…Curves are a good thing! Embrace them!
So, back to the sleeve situation….I guess there isn’t really a good or bad sleeve length. It really depends on how you see the sleeve situation…as it relates to you! But I do have to encourage you to try something new! You might be surprised…in a good way!!

I hope to see YOU!
It’s time to have a Mission to Transition our closets to prepare for Fall…for real! I decided this morning…it’s about that time…for me to transition my own closet to Fall! It’s time to clean out the closet….re examine the black pants…spruce up my look for Fall! I’m on it!
As I look over my closet (specifically, black pants!) I notice that some of those pants I have had for awhile now. They look really different from the pants I have bought recently. Hmmm…..they might not make the cut!?
Be particular! Be relentless! Don’t keep them just because at some point you Had to have them, so you bought them!
If you have trouble separating from your old clothes…think of it this way. Share them with people who don’t have any black pants…and need some! Some ideas for repurposing your old things?? Goodwill, your church, a charity in your area, maybe?? They will love to have them!! Your cast offs are likely to be Life Changing for Someone!
I want to take a minute and share just some of the great notes I have recently received! They motivated me to transition to Fall, maybe they will help you to adopt the Mission to Transition!?!
…..I looked thru closets and found several black sweaters and a nice silk jersey turtleneck, so have black. (I also cleaned out all my closets and feel just great and in control)😷. Thurs. I am devoting the day to trying on ALL my pants and eliminating any that don’t fit right.
I truely feel good. MS
….I wore my new dress to the opening cocktail party at (the club) Saturday night. It was such a treat to wear – so great looking and as comfortable as a bathrobe! I got many compliments, including one from a most attractive young woman who said she was taking note of the best looking dresses at the party and mine was in the top 10😀 Thank you Barbara!…..SU

Save some time to come and see me and what’s new!
This is a perfect example!
I wore my NEW dress from Fall 2017 the other day.
I loved it! Comfortable, New, Snazzy…all in all, GOOD. Until I looked at the picture!! As you can see…I neglected the lingerie keepers!!! Oh No!! Now I have a perfect reminder….a pic of what I shouldn’t do!! (Ugh!)
This is a perfect reason to wear our clothes often!! That way we can practice how we like them BEST. If we rarely wear our clothes we won’t have the chance to get the best use out of them…..and we won’t discover how we like them BEST!
Hopefully, next time I wear this dress I will look in the mirror before I walk out the door!
Please comment & share your thoughts about style & fashion!!
