What I Wear Where!
Recently we went to dinner with some friends that I am crazy about. The biggest problem we have is that we don’t see enough of each other! It seems like there is never enough time! I was sitting on the couch chatting with the hostess when all of a sudden, all I could think of was ‘Oh No!!’ I am wearing the same thing I wore last time we were here!! Exactly the same thing!
You see just the week before, I was meeting with a New Client, Sandra. She was new to me….and to Doncaster. She bought a dress and as she was trying it on we were talking ‘Fashionista Speak’…you know what that is right?!
Where she will wear her new dress, what shoes she will wear with it, where she is going wearing her new dress….etc. Sandra asked me/told me that she keeps a note of what she wears to which event and she asked me if I did that. I assured her that I work hard to pay close attention to what I wear, but I haven’t actually gotten around to making notes. So imagine my surprise, when I found myself in that very same situation….within the week!!! ‘Oh No!’
I guess I will have to start making notes for myself! Clearly the old habit of ‘thinking about it’ isn’t working so well for me anymore. So I reached out to her again…so, Sandra, how do you do that?! Where and how do you keep your Fashion Diary, I asked? It has to be simple. It has to be accurate. And it has to be easy to see and, therefore, to actually use! I found an old diary sort of thing I have never used….that is pretty (very important) and small-ish, also important….and I have found a perfect spot front and center in my closet! I got it all set this weekend, and already I feel so well organized!
I have decided to call it ‘What I Wear Where’! Cute isn’t it!?! Actually it is perfect timing! For the next few weeks I am happy to say that I have places to go and things to do! Everything should be much easier for me if I can quickly look up what I wore there last time I went there!
Try it. Maybe this little tip will help you to navigate your closet more effectively. We want to wear more of the clothes we already have, so that when the New Collection (Doncaster Spring 2018) becomes available we will be ready for some pretty, new, things!!
Last week I had a Fashion Emergency! Oh No!
I decided one day to take my own advice and wear some of the black pants that are just hanging in my closet but that I haven’t worn for ages. I decided to go for my Favorite Old pants from last year. They were my Favorites!! I put them on, I easily zipped them up (Yeah!) put on a New black top and I’m off! Or so I thought!! By the time I finished my cereal, I was fidgeting and so uncomfortable! Why? I asked myself? These pants were front zip, black knit, trim….but not skinny….and I still loved the fabric. So where did I go wrong!?!
Remember, these pants were favorites, so I was determined to keep trying to identify the problem! Maybe it isn’t the pants….maybe it’s the top? Because the top was new, I had not worn them together. Ok….I’ll change my top. that’s easy enough! So I put on another top….and alas….still not right. This time my bra straps were right there!! So, still not willing to concede that this is what happens when we try to make our favorite old things work year after year. Is it just because the styles have changed? They haven’t really changed that much….trim pants or fuller legs?? It’s pretty much your choice. In 2017 pretty much anything goes! So all right…..I’ll try one more thing…..I ended up with a white blouse, untucked, and a new cashmere cardigan with all kinds of pattern! Success!! (Thank heavens!) I felt like I could conquer my day!
So, the real learning in this little exercise? I was really irritated! If I hadn’t persevered I would have been fussy and uncomfortable all day long! And, so, it would have been so difficult to do all the things I wanted to do that day. The other thing was that it took me a really long time!! I was way behind by the time I felt like I could walk out the door! And, finally, I realized I have clients that go thru this all the time….I’m sure!! So how can I help them!?!
WEAR THEM IN GOOD HEALTH….AND WEAR THEM OFTEN! BBD
Most of you will be very familiar with that phrase by now. We really should not keep things in our closet, to look at every day, that we do not and are not going to wear! We have enough decisions to make first thing in the morning besides mentally sort thru a closet full of clothes that we are not going to wear!! They are too small, they are too big, they are too old, and they just don’t work any more. But if they stay in the closet we have to look at them every day and consider putting them on….just because they are there.
We are important women (and men too!). We have places to go and things to do. Let’s decide to sort thru all the things in our closets and remove the things that just aren’t right for us anymore. Give them to an organization that will distribute them to people that really need them! And then we will feel better….and be able to accomplish even MORE….and the recipients, too, will be able to THRIVE!
What a wonderful time of the year it is!?
Let’s be grateful for the life we have! For the difference we make in the cities that we live in and the wonderful opportunities that come our way! Thank you all for all the ways you impact our world today!
This time I am going to share some of MY inspirations!
Nobody is asking any one of us to be Perfect!
What ever size we wear ….. we’re good! We can do a lot! Do not let your size define you!
And then, there is this one!
Happy Thanksgiving from our house to yours!!
It has been an amazing few weeks here in Milwaukee! It seems anyone that has a cause they are passionate about is having an event….some kind of event…..to share with their friends in town this week. They are all terrific causes, and they are causes that are championed by some Wonderful Women…and Men!
The week began with the Johnson Bank Financial Team sponsoring Andy Olen author of The Trilogy of YES! Andy maintains that if you want to grow your business success will come in 3 parts…..Connect, Communicate & Cooperate with the client. It’s like a 3 legged stool…we must think of them all together or we will be off balance and Fail. This last week I have been Connecting with old friends….and NEW! Now the challenge will be to Communicate with them, and tell them about what I do! And then, I will need to Cooperate with them and my company to accommodate their needs in a way that works for them! Not always easy to do!
The Women’s Fund of Greater Milwaukee sponsored a celebration of the 45th Anniversary of Title IX. When Title IX became law in 1972 it mandated inclusive opportunities for all…Men and Women. While life in 2017 is much more inclusive than it was in 1972, it isn’t where it should be. For example, do you know that in Girls Athletics, still…. while they do have an audience….the price of admission to the game is a fraction of the price per ticket as to the Boys games….and … generally, maybe not always, the concession stand is NOT OPEN…and Hot dogs and Coke are not available for sale at the Girls’ games! What??!!
Alverno College held a seminar featuring some very successful women in business in Milwaukee. The advice they shared was this…Be Open To Growth! Make it a habit to say YES! Thank you! I would love to….and see where it takes you! The practice of business in 2017 is very different than it was in 1972. The young women today will have to find their own way if they are aspiring to have a career in the C Suite!
Confidence and Leadership are muscles…you learn to use them, or you learn Not To!
And, last but not least….Planned Parenthood. It is a cause that my husband and I are passionate about. We are proud of the way young women are stepping up to leadership positions of PP today are poised to make important contributions to the advocacy of safe, inclusive health care….for men and women. Female healthcare, its policies and practices, are no place for politics. Period.
So, here I am, at the end of the week feeling beyond proud of the accomplishments of the women of my city! They are smart, capable & successful. They are leaders in businesses of all kinds….and they are changing lives of all the people of our city in many ways…everyday.
We are role models and mentors for the young women who are coming up behind us. Whether we realize it or not, the girls coming up behind us are watching us! So, let’s make it a point to do ourselves proud. Let’s be women that Get Up. Dress Up. & Show Up! And…let’s be sure we LOOK the part!
The Girls have their work cut out for them! Nothing is the same as it was in 1972! They will have to forge a new path…use new & different skills. They will have a much better chance to be successful if they forge their path….Well Dressed!
Let’s show the girls coming up behind us that we respect ourselves and each other. Let’s resolve to Dress Well!
It happened to me last week.
I was trying to do everything!! At once!! To get caught up…and to get ahead!! And the week was speeding by! And everything seemed to be happening at once! And all of a sudden it was Thursday!! The week was almost over!
I was so upset!! All night!! What should I wear!? To do all these different things I had scheduled!! This one is at the cleaners, this one needs to go to the cleaners!! Yikes!!! What to do!?!?! How will I do it all!?! I could wear this one….nope maybe that one…!?! And finally I fell asleep!
I got up on Friday morning bright and early. I showered, did my exercises and decided to quickly check my email before I got dressed…just to make sure I still had to Everything!
The first email I saw, was my client saying she didn’t need her new things today….it’s summer vacation!! Relax and come when you can! It’s no problem, I’m around! Hmmm……I thought. And the very next email I opened was from my good friend Meg Daly! She is a Personal Coach and always has valuable pearls of wisdom to share! Her advice to the Universe that day?? It was to ask the question….Are you making your life overly complicated!!?? Yes, I am!!! Oh No!!
So, I changed the date with my client. I went to the gym and my trainer. I came home and changed my clothes. Then I went to hostess (with an old friend and a new friend!) an important luncheon event. Then I came home, for a minute, and Harry and I went out to dinner with some friends! Phew it was a busy day! But I lived thru it!!
And I lived thru it, well dressed!! Thank heavens for my Doncaster clothes! They take me to the places I go!! I went every where (accept to the trainer…and on some days I even go there!) dressed in Doncaster….LOVE the Miracle Pants!
The learning? Dress Well! You never know where your day will take you…and who you will meet. And…Stop…just for a minute…to listen to the Universe! There is every chance that some one , some where out there, is looking out for you, after all.
Today is a Good Day for a Good Day!
Recently we took a trip to meet up with some really good friends that we haven’t seen in such a long time! It was a Birthday Party, in Florida…
Happy Birthday Chris and Cappy!
and we had so much fun! We have known these people for most of our lives!! We knew their parents…and in some cases Grandparents! And, of course, we know their children and their spouses, and now their Grandchildren also! It’s such an amazing phenomenon, when you think about it! Think about it this way….how many generations do you know of your closest friends!?! Probably not that many! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again! 🙂
We are the Lucky Ones….!
Actually, we had a lot of fun during our short visit talking about ME….and my BLOG! Imagine that?!? Everyone we saw has not subscribed to BBDStyle….yet…but we still had such fun talking about…
Get Up. Dress Up. & Show Up
….and the rest will be History in the making.
It turns out that the women love it, and often recite to themselves….Barbara Drake says…GU.DU.SU…..but the real surprise was that the men said the same thing! The most brilliant thing about this one is….it sounds like it should be so easy….but we all know that on some days it is Really, Really Hard!
Then one of the guys said, I like the other one she says even better!! I was so surprised! Which one could he be talking about??
Dress like you are going somewhere better…later!
Of course I said!! That’s a great one too! Those of you that see me often know that I use that one a lot!
So, alas, finally it was time we all had to leave and go back to the real world! We went to pack our bags and get ready to go out to Brunch with some other friends, on our way to our next stop. As we rode down the elevator we thought everyone else had already left….but, not so! As we stepped out of the elevator into the lobby the birthday girl exclaimed….OMG! Are You Going Somewhere Better…Next!?! 🙂 And I immediately got it! Well, I thought….That’s for me to know….and for you to find out, I guess!! 🙂
So if you haven’t tried it yet….think about it this way….keep them guessing!! What are you doing?? Where are you going?? If you dress like you are going somewhere important….you will keep them all guessing! How fun is that!? It’s easy….and comfortable….to be well dressed when you have the right tools!! Think of your clothes as your “tools”….and think of your favorite tools as your Doncaster clothes!!
I have the Fall 2017 here at home if you can come see what’s new, please call me! This is a great time to shop….
If you travel a lot, or have the grandkids come to visit Wisconsin in the Summertime…
If you have a busy schedule, and find you can take a break NOW…
If you are a Fashionista at heart and want to see and take advantage of the Next New Thing!
Call me if you can make it! You will be glad you did!
… after reading my recent post…..that I am going to concentrate on being grateful for all the things I Can Do….and stop beating myself up for the things I can’t do!!
And what we can all do is to Get Up. Dress Up. Show Up …and make some History! And fingers crossed, it will be all good!
So, are you with me…?! 🙂
Please comment & share your thoughts!
Are you anxiously awaiting Spring 2017…. well, I think that’s a great plan!
I think a really good way to freshen up your look for this time of year is to add some Navy to your basic looks. Move away from the usual Black…just a bit….to Navy. When you connect the garments you already have in your closet to Navy, instead of Black, you will get a whole new look and feel to your regular go to clothes! White, Winter White and Ivory can be new neutrals with your Navy and/or Black things as well.
This is a really good time to add a little bit of pattern to your wardrobe also. Something that can blend with Black and Navy is a great choice! You don’t have to have a lot….but choose a big bold print to update your closet! It’s current and on trend, and when it is blended with Black/Navy I bet you will be able to embrace it wholeheartedly! And think of the additional looks you will have!
If you just can’t embrace a lot of pattern, try a new, bold Color! This season some beautiful and New colors are Lollipop Red and Sugar Coral. Both are pretty and bold and will definitely put a bounce in your step! Both, or either, work with Black, and with Navy also! Choose a pretty pattern in a blouse? A scarf? A dress?! And remember….reptile/animal print is still a perfect update to your new look!
This is also a good time to add some new accessories….or dig deep to find the things you already have…and love! If you find some things you haven’t worn in a while, and you don’t love….separate from them!! Don’t hang on to things you don’t love! Life is too short to wear clothes, jewelry, accessories that you don’t like! Everything will be better if you add some new things to update your look for Spring 2017!
Think about it … I’m certain you will be glad you did!
It’s Showtime! in Milwaukee
Doncaster Spring/Summer 2017

@ Women’s Club of Wisconsin
813 E. Kilbourn Ave., Milwaukee
Come See Me! And what’s New!
And watch the expression on her face change! Try it! You will be surprised, I think.
Because it is doubtful that she thinks of herself as beautiful! I saw something on Facebook the other day…two things in fact. The first was a collection of women from all over the world. There were examples of women caught up in the throws of what life has to offer…we all have them, days like that. When it seems like the world is going to Get You after all. And, right about then a woman walked by and said…You Are So Beautiful (and she said it like she meant it! And I’m sure that she did)! Immediately the woman’s facial expression changed, dramatically….in fact her whole body language changed….dramatically! We need to do that for each other. I’m going to try it!
The next one was a couple of young women, maybe 20ish? They were sitting and chatting with each other. I guess the assignment was to tell each other, what you feel your own personal body flaws are. I got the impression that the girls were not life long friends….and maybe they were meeting for the first time. Each went on with descriptives of what they saw as their own body flaws. In fact, it was so difficult for them that they were moved to tears….as was I. You see these lovely, young women Were So Hard On Themselves!! They were lovely, young women! It seemed to me that they had no flaws…what were they going to talk about!?! OMG!! Each of them had a list…a long list….of what they perceived of as problems/issues of their own physique. I was amazed!
So, I ask myself, why do we do this…to ourselves!!?!!
Recently I was talking with a friend and she was asking me to identify some people in a big group photo. Nancy said, look at Phyllis!! Isn’t she so beautiful!?! Well, yes I said, she is. OMG! Nancy said, I just LOVE her looks! Her hair is so beautiful! She has those beautiful dimples, she has matured into the most FABULOUS WOMAN! I just love her mannerisms and her clever vocabulary! Now, I happened to know both of these women…well, and for a long time. And I know that Phyllis does not see herself like that. And it made me think that it is such a shame! How do you think her life might have changed…or not?….if she wasn’t so hard on herself for what she sees as terrible flaws!
So, think about this. Next time YOU look in the mirror, think to yourself ….what do you suppose others would say about me first? Say…3 things…..I’ll bet you that those 3 things will not be the first 3 things that you would say. Try it with a friend some time. See what you 2 come up with….and then let me know! I expect you will be surprised!
Please comment & share your thoughts about the beauty of women!!
Oh No! I have nothing to wear!
Now, those of you that know me well….know that couldn’t be true! What, You Say?!?
I guess it is more about the fact that I am so tired of wearing the same, old thing! (I could Scream!!) I get up, go to my closet … I can’t decide what to wear….so I choose the same, old thing I wore yesterday…and maybe even the day before that!! What am I thinking??? Whatever ever happened to Get Up. Dress Up. & Show Up….And the Rest Will Be History!? (My mantra?!?) The last time this happened I made a promise to myself….I’m going shopping in my closet! Today! No more wearing the same thing every day, just because it is easier!
So, I did it! I got up and noticed, immediately, that it was a bright & sunny day, a rare occurrence in early February in Wisconsin! I went into my closet and chose something that was right there and I haven’t really worn it since Christmas. Today is the day! I chose the beautiful red, silk blouse, and favorite necklace….so then I decided it was alright to wear my favorite black pants! Some red lipstick…and I was out the door! A few years ago I started a Lunch Bunch group with 2 other ladies named Barbara. Oddly enough we even have last names that begin with D, so we call ourselves BD3…BD Cubed! And just by coincidence, that day was Go Red for Women Day! And I had on my Red Silk Blouse! As it turned out, it was so much fun! Sometimes we have 4 or 5 ladies show up, and this day we had about 12! It was wonderful!
So, here is the learning….I could so easily have stayed in my “same old” rut, but I took my own advice…to GU.DU.&SU. (get it?)…and I am So Glad That I Did! Everything was better. It sounds crazy, I know….but it works. I dare you…Try It….and see for yourself!
So, now that I have had a few days of dressing up….well, maybe not Up, but at least better….I am even getting myself into some of my new Spring 2017 things. On purpose, when I was shopping last with the current Doncaster Collection I chose things that are transitional, that I can wear early in the season when I am Really feeling the need to have some NEW looks. So, now….it is time to Wear Them! Remember, Wear them in good health…and wear them often! That is how we become comfortable in our newer things and embrace all the good things that will come our way because we are well dressed!
So, try it for yourself. Accept the challenge! You will be so glad that you did!!
If you need some inspiration go to Doncaster.com and check it out!? I’m confident you will find some things to perk up your closet! And, you will be glad that you did!
Please comment & share your thoughts about mixing up your closet!!
