It has taken me a little while to get my arms around that! I am struck by the fact that we are living in the FUTURE!! Or almost anyway!! I think that 2020 is definitely the future….and it is practically here! Yikes!
So, I’m a little tardy with my New Years ideas. I heard a really good tip just the other day. My good friend Meg Daly ( https://mojomeg.com ) was talking about how to move forward into the New Year and rise to the occasion of setting up 2019 as a good year….maybe the best one yet!?! She suggested that we think about 2018, and the things we did, and the places that we went to, and make note of them so that we can make sure to continue to be involved in those things that bring us happiness and joy during 2019. Maybe your connection is with the cause itself, maybe it is with the people you know there, but let’s try hard to continue doing those things that, for whatever reason, make us feel good. When we feel good life is much better!
I want to add to that suggestion….that while you are doing that exercise of reviewing your 2018 calendar, think about what you WORE to those places for those variety of events. Think about this…sometimes the things we do, and really enjoy doing, are often about the experience that we share with others and about how the experience makes us feel. And what is more fun than getting up and putting on clothes that we like…just because they put a bounce in your step!?!
Get Up. Dress Up. and Show Up….And the Rest Will be History!
After all, when we get up and get dressed, in our favorites….there is a very good chance that it will be a very good day! You don’t have to be dressed up exactly, just dressed in your favorite looks….for whatever it is you are doing today. Try hard to make it a habit! I think that might be my best tip yet!?
So, here’s to 2019! Here’s hoping that it will be the best one yet….for all of us!! 🙂
And Happy New Year, too!
These last few weeks I have been busy going places and doing things with good, old friends that generally I only see at this time of year. It’s always good to connect with good friends…new and/or old!
What I have noticed recently is that lots of the people I know are changing things up for Christmas 2018. Why?? It seems like lots of us are having to modify our Christmas Traditions for their families….they have to modify the old ways/habits/traditions to accommodate everyone’s changing life patterns. It happens to all of us….it’s not necessarily bad, it’s just maybe, different. And sometimes different isn’t always easy!
Maybe your grown children have to work this Christmas?? Maybe you have one more seat at your dinner table this year. And….maybe, you have one less…and that creates a whole in your heart? Maybe your kids have moved out of town? Maybe your parents have moved to a smaller house and can’t easily accommodate the whole group the way they always did. Or maybe the Christmas Eve tradition needs to change this year to make room for church….and dinner. Because we can’t cook dinner for a crowd, even a small crowd, and be at church at the same time. We are really good at what we do….but sometimes even I have to admit that I just can’t do it all. Darn it!
The most important thing to remember this time of year….is to do the best we can to find ways that can include as many of our Christmas Traditions, and family members, and friends, as possible. If necessary maybe we can find new friends to make new traditions with? Maybe even some new places to make family favorites. Maybe we can modify our plans just enough, so that all the family can come, after all? If this year somebody just can’t make it, we will send them hugs and kisses anyway we can….and carry on.
Merry Christmas to you and your family from me and mine!
Changing times….it is so hard for us….in many ways! We can get so stuck in a look that it becomes very difficult for us to say OK, OK! I’ll try something different!!
Recently I had lunch with a friend who has had some pretty dramatic changes in her life recently…..she is quite a bit smaller than she was the last time I saw her (good for her!) But the thing that was most interesting was that she was wearing a Very Different Look! She was wearing pants, jeans even!! She looked beautiful….but so different….that I couldn’t take my eyes off her! I was stunned!
As we pursued this conversation about how different her look is today than it was 6 months ago it was so interesting! I learned that not only has her size changed, but the places she goes to have changed up quite a bit also. This woman has a busy life, so it is very important that she has a closet that works for her…. a wardrobe that takes her to a variety of places every day. Between the life pattern changes and the size change, she some how found the courage to try some new things!!! Like wearing pants! Jeans even!
It is really hard for most of us to try new things….whether they are new habits, or clothes, or a new school for the children, or a new business for Dad?? Or to send our children off to nursery school, first grade or college even! Anyone of these changes will send our lives into a very different path….which then will nudge us to try something we didn’t even think of before. As women, when someone/something in our family changes, so does our routine, a new school schedule for example….our schedule changes also. Maybe we aren’t going to the gym 3 days a week any more….or maybe we will start going more often now!?! Any of these changes will push us to try something new….maybe even a new wardrobe!?!
While we were talking about her new life the other day, it made me think that so many people I know….and I got to thinking about how hard it is for some people to change up their look. It has been a Very Long Time for lots of them!! Give yourself a push to try something new! Anything new!! A new book/author….even a new restaurant, even better if it’s in a new part of town….for you! Do you always wear pants?? Try a skirt!…?? Why?? Just because…
Being able to adapt to new things is the thing that will keep us young….at least keep us young at heart! Over the years, I have noticed that as we age, we make our lives smaller and smaller slowly, one day at a time and pretty soon our life gets very small….we don’t go to the same places….or do the same things….even with our good old friends. It’s hard to change our ways. Let’s not be that woman! Let’s commit to each other that we will try new things….and go to new places….when we can and maybe along the way we will make some new friends.
Just one more thing! It’s so important! If you do decide to try something new, give yourself permission to make a mistake!! For Pete’s Sake!! You might find that when you actually try it….you might not like it!! Maybe, if you Always wear black pants, you will consider wearing jeans….but if they don’t work out for you the way you hoped they would, put them right into the Goodwill bag! Don’t fret about that! Just move on to the next thing! It will most likely work out!
Girls Scout Motto: Make new friends, but keep the old,
One is silver and the other gold!
P.S. Just after I wrote this the other day, I snuck out to the movies: A Star is Born. If you haven’t seen it, please put it on your radar! I loved it!! I think this is a movie we want to see in the theatre because the sound is amazing! These are the lyrics from the first big number that Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga sing on stage!!!
Maybe it’s time to let the old ways die, Maybe it’s time to let the old ways die
It takes a lot to change a man,
Hell, it takes a lot to try… Maybe it’s time…
What about you??? Is it time to try something new…?!

Try it! Make it a point to try something new to you….each day!
Today was the day for me! I had some errands to do at the Mall. It’s about a 1/2 hour away from me, so I try to plan my visits out there carefully. Besides …. I Hate going to the Mall. But, I decided to say Yes to the adventure and just do it! And, I’m so glad that I did!
The first thing I did was to return some shoes to Nordstrom. I pulled up to the area and I noticed there was a sign right in front of me that said I could text the store and someone would come out to my car to pick up my returns. I had never done that before. But, I thought…I’m going to try this. And it was that good! I saved some steps….and some energy…..and it was EASY! So I was starting to feel really good!
So, then I was feeling very brave….and decided to drive around to the other end of the Mall…and because I was in a different place than usual, I took a different route. I think it was because of that that I found the perfect parking spot for the things I wanted to do. Yeah! I am never that lucky! 🙂 As I entered the Mall, in a different location than usual, I walked right by Panera….I love cheesy bread at Panera! So I went to do my errands…..and as I was leaving…..I decided to stop and get some cheesy bread to take home! Yeah!!
By now I was feeling good and very brave!! So when I passed by Five Guys…by now it was getting to be lunchtime….I decided to stop by and have a burger and fries. Five Guys came to Milwaukee YEARS ago….and I haven’t been there since it first opened….so I decided to take the plunge and try it again. Guess What?!? I liked it! Especially the fries!! When I finished eating lunch I went to one more place….Talbots. It just so happened that they were have a great sale….I think almost everything I bought was on sale….about 90% off!! Since Doncaster died I was in serious need of some new clothes….and they were exactly the right price!! How could I resist?!?
It was a great day! I’m so glad I went….and so glad that I did some things in a new (to me!) way! It made me feel really good! Empowered even! I got my errands done in a timely fashion….I bought some foods that Harry and I love but hardly ever actually eat….and I even got some new clothes to perk up my closet. All in all it was a great day!
When was the last time you tried something new?? Can you even remember when it was? Try it! When the occasion presents itself think about my day…..think about how great I felt at the end of the day….how empowered I felt just because I did a few “usual” things a little differently than I usually do them.
Think of it this way…..Today is a Good Day for a Good Day!

I hear it all the time!
Is it OK to wear Black in August?? Is it OK to wear White after Labor Day?? What is a girl to do??
The short answer is YES!! To both queries!
Just recently we have attended 2 funerals, never a happy thought. As we were preparing to make the trips to these events I had the same old problem….what should I wear? Do I really have to wear Black to a funeral these days?? I think not! Does Harry really have to wear a dark suit?? Probably not! But, on the other hand I have a great Black dress that I love, so why not wear it? Then Harry decided to wear his dark suit after all, even tho it was supposed to be about 100 degrees that day!
So, we both dressed like we were taught to, and we both wore dark clothes to the funeral….both of them. And…it’s a good thing. Because at both events, everyone, pretty much Everyone…..was wearing Black! I feel compelled to mention this because I would have told you that these days, it really doesn’t matter so much what you wear….we are just happy that you get to where you are going. But, I was wrong! Definitely! So, if you have an occasion to wear a little black dress….embrace it, and wear it! No matter the temperature outside. I am confident at the end of the day you will be able to say….I am so glad that I took her advice and I wore my black dress today! It was the perfect thing…..and I wore it everywhere I went, all day long!
As for the white after Labor Day??? Again, the short answer is YES! Altho there is a BIG BUT…! They must be stain free and relatively new white pants! Think about this…..your favorite white pants, and your favorite black top and a fabulous necklace? Or your favorite black pants that you haven’t worn in a while and a GREAT, new, beautiful, white blouse. It’s a great look…for pretty everyone and for pretty much anywhere.
Black & White is still probably the most used …. and most comfortable look for any season, but especially for in between seasons….wherever you live!
