Wear It In Good Health….and Wear It Often!

This is a perfect example!

I wore my NEW dress from Fall 2017 the other day.

I loved it! Comfortable, New, Snazzy…all in all, GOOD. Until I looked at the picture!! As you can see…I neglected the lingerie keepers!!! Oh No!! Now I have a perfect reminder….a pic of what I shouldn’t do!! (Ugh!)

This is a perfect reason to wear our clothes often!! That way we can practice how we like them BEST. If we rarely wear our clothes we won’t have the chance to get the best use out of them…..and we won’t discover how we like them BEST!

Hopefully, next time I wear this dress I will look in the mirror before I walk out the door!

Thank You!

I had such fun! I’ve just finished up SHOWTIME! for Spring & Summer 2017. It was so much fun to see so many friends….some that I see regularly, and some that I hardly ever see! I just love my job! ¬†ūüôā

But the most surprising thing was how many people told me ….”I’m trying to add navy to my closet”! Remember?? You might remember … That was my advice in the last newsletter that I wrote! It was cute the first time, and in fact almost went over my head! Yet by the time I transferred the clothes to the next person I had heard the same thing from soooooo many people! How fun is that!?

Body Confidence

Do you have a problem/dilemma that you can’t solve in your closet? Let me know! And I will try to shed some light on a way to tackle that problem! I guess that my biggest problem is making sure that there is Nothing in my closet that I can’t wear … right now! Everything should be fixed, clean, fit!, and make me feel good when I put it on!

They say, Life is Not a Dress Rehearsal! I don’t want to waste my time with clothes that don’t work for me anymore! They just aren’t good enough. The things in my closet have to take me to the places that I go to. If they don’t make me feel good when I put them on, then I figure that I just don’t need them any more…they just aren’t good enough! It’s too hard to Fall in Love with Your Life ….when your pants don’t fit!

Doncaster Spring
Doncaster Spring

So… start being selective! Be Discriminating! If your pants don’t fit, aren’t comfortable…don’t make you feel good….separate from them right then and there. Keep a shopping bag in the bottom of your closet. If you can’t wait to get out of those pants, put them right into that bag when you take them off…and share them with a charity that will make sure they get connected to someone that can really Use Them!

You will be SO GLAD that you did!

Freshen Up for Spring!

Are you anxiously awaiting Spring 2017…. well, I think that’s a great plan!Doncaster Fashion

I think a really good way to freshen up your look for this time of year is to add some Navy to your basic looks. Move away from the usual Black…just a bit….to Navy. When you connect the garments you already have in your closet to Navy, instead of Black, you will get a whole new look and feel to your regular go to clothes! White, Winter White and Ivory can be new neutrals with your Navy and/or Black things as well.

Doncaster Fashion

This is a really good time to add a little bit of pattern to your wardrobe also. Something that can blend with Black and Navy is a great choice! You don’t have to have a lot….but choose a big bold print to update your closet! It’s current and on trend, and when it is blended with Black/Navy I bet you will be able to embrace it wholeheartedly! And think of the additional looks you will have!

If you just can’t embrace a lot of pattern, try a new, bold Color! This season some beautiful and New colors are Lollipop Red and Sugar Coral. Both are pretty and bold and will definitely put a bounce in your step! Both, or either, work with Black, and with Navy also! ¬†Choose a pretty pattern in a blouse? A scarf? A dress?! And remember….reptile/animal print is still a perfect update to your new look!

Doncaster Fashion

Doncaster Fashion

This is also a good time to add some new accessories….or dig deep to find the things you already have…and love! If you find some things you haven’t worn in a while, and you don’t love….separate from them!! Don’t hang on to things you don’t love! Life is too short to wear clothes, jewelry, accessories that you don’t like! Everything will be better if you add some new things to update your look for Spring 2017!

Think about it … I’m certain you will be glad you did!

It’s Time!

Spring Ahead

It’s Time to Spring forward into Spring 2017!

The first thing to do is to commit to Moving Forward! Commit to Ditch the Black Knit pants! They are stretched out and tired and no doubt they have had a lot of wear and tear in the last 6 months or so! A really good way to do that is to substitute jeans for those black leggings. The jeans, they can be denim….but they can also be a bright colored jeans style trouser, or a patterned pant.Doncaster Denim

Denim is huge this season!

If you haven’t worn it for awhile, you might like to try it again. You will be surprised how quickly you will get a fresh new outlook on an everyday look. I used to use this all the time…. Some of you might even remember it. Lighten Up Your Bottom!! Lighten it up with khaki pants, a lighter neutral….or a great Lollipop Red pair of jeans…Python print trim bottoms! It’s really hard to have a bad day wearing Red Jeans! ūüôā

Doncaster DenimOr, instead of mindlessly heading to the hooks on the bathroom door for those tired, old, leggings….why not try a skirt/dress for a change!? I think you will find it’s a great way to Get Up. Dress Up. and Show Up! As the clocks are Springing Forward so are our clothes! The days will start to get longer…hopefully a little brighter….and maybe we can start to think about wearing a Pretty Color! A new color, a new patterned bottom maybe? Just think about the possibilities!

BBD StyleIf you aren’t ready to buy Spring just yet, start by mixing up your daily wardrobe with something in your closet, that you haven’t worn in a while….maybe, you can’t even remember the last time you wore it!? Try it! You will know right away whether or not it’s a keeper. You will love it….or not….and surely by the end of the day you will have some new favorites in the closet that you can GoTo instead of those tired old leggings!Doncaster Spring

Give it a try! I think you will be glad that you did!

Doncaster

We just LOVED it!

One of the really good things about January is that it’s a great time to go to the movies.

Hidden FiguresThere is a great movie out there right now, in fact it just opened, Hidden Figures. It is a story based on fact. It takes place in the South in the 60’s and it is the story of how 3 women, 3 black women, changed the course of history in the space race in the 1960’s. You see these women were mathematical geniuses…for real! They knew each other personally, they grew up in the same era so they were all familiar with what and where women were expected or allowed to do, and were all aware of the race relations and the mores of the time. But, in spite of all the difficult obstacles each one found her way to thrive…not just survive!

Doncaster Fashion

I loved the women! They were smart and they were kind. They were patient, with each other and with their circumstances. They were, each of them, always well dressed. It was very obvious that they respected themselves enough to make the effort to be well dressed as a regular habit. It was obvious from their appearance that they respected themselves and therefore earned the respect of others around them. Each woman had a different shape, like we all do, but each looked great in her wardrobe! I loved the clothes in this movie! Each one of the ladies did everything from fixing car engines (from underneath the car!), to running across the NASA campus to find a “colored Ladies Room” to preparing dinner and saying prayers with the kids. They were always, very well dressed! Even so, it took a lot of patience in order to persevere! Each was polite and well spoken, even in the most stressful circumstances. They each had plenty of obstacles….they were women…..they were brilliant mathematicians…and they were black, in the South, in the 1960’s. And they managed to persevere with strength and dignity and essentially save the US Space program. It is so ironic that the ladies were so instrumental in making John Glenn’s orbit around the earth….and the movie is released so close to the time of his death. Hmmmm…..Another amazing detail? All three of these ladies, in their 90’s now, are still alive. It’s just an amazing story! I hope you can find the time to go and see it for yourself. I think it will get you thinking too.

Doncaster Fashion

So, the moral of the story….you have heard me say it before….

Get Up. Dress Up. & Show Up….and the rest will be history!

Use this time to clean out your closets… Think Out with the old!! In with the New!! This is a great time of year to pare down to the favorite “old favorites” so that when you are so inclined you will embrace adding some pretty New Looks to your wardrobe! If you need some inspiration come see me at SHOWTIME!…next week!

She was soooo stunning!

I saw the most attractive woman tonight on my way home from the city.

Version 2

We have the most beautiful lakefront here in Milwaukee. It has been a long day, so I came home by the lake. I was going along with the crowd, not really paying much attention to what was going on around me…on this GORGEOUS, FALL DAY…down by the beach!!

dscn0099

All of a sudden I noticed this woman jogging/walking/taking her daily constitutional walk…you could just tell! She was stunning! I don’t know her…at all! She was a big, tall, black woman…maybe 6′ tall. Her hair was black and shiny, pulled back and she had the most beautiful look on her face. She was plugged into her tunes and completely enjoying her moment! She was a big woman. She had a curvy shape, bigger breasts and full round hips….but she didn’t “jiggle” anywhere! It was so amazing! I guess one reason I found her looks to be so alluring is that she didn’t fit the “usual” definition of beautiful. And yet I was just mesmerized by her demeanor. She seemed so happy! So strong and confident! I wish I had had the opportunity to meet this woman.14237744_10153703860332441_1090965065349285670_n

I decided I just HAD to write about her, because¬†she made me think about how do we actually define what is beautiful? Alluring?? Captivating?? What is the elusive thing that we call beauty. Take a minute out of your busy day and think about it. I’m guessing, like me this afternoon, when you really think about it, it will probably include characteristics that might surprise you. Confidence, strength…physical size and general coordination. In this case, this afternoon, it was NOT about what the lady was wearing….or….what she wasn’t wearing! It was all about everything else…..and it was fascinating!

Think about it. What do you find attractive….watch the people living their lives around you. Is there something that stands out?? Something that you might notice…and find attractive? In a new way??10537057_591065384335270_1690727194781741237_n

Think about it! I think you will be glad you did!

Wear it in good health…

….and wear it often!¬†Those are words to live by!!

Doncaster Fall FashionWhy is it that when we go out to buy new clothes, we buy new clothes, presumably that we LOVE and then we SAVE them! I don’t know why we do that! When we buy new things that we love….we should wear them! They do us no good at all when they are hanging in the closet!

Doncaster Fall Fashion

There are lots of reasons to wear them often! I guess one of the most important reasons is because wearing our new look is one way we can become comfortable in our own skins. It gives us a chance to practice wearing them different ways. I always advocate for buying¬†the LOOK…as opposed to a piece at a time, because that is how we build a great wardrobe. Right now I am experimenting with some of my new Fall clothes, mostly because just now it is finally cool enough to wear them comfortably! Last night we went out and I wore my new giant paisley pants….and the tweed jacket/coat in the same group. It was a LOT going on at once, but after all that is what we are seeing all over the place for Fall 2016! This is definitely a season for More is More! Well, I’m so glad that I tried it….because I didn’t like it at all! It was way too much for even me! So, the learning was…stick with one novelty at a time….either the giant paisley pattern OR the tweed jacket. It is more predictable, but it is also much more comfortable for me. I couldn’t wait to get home and take my clothes off! And that rarely, in fact almost never, happens to me.

fall-peek2016Earlier this week I was called for Jury Duty. What to wear?? Did it matter?? I’ve been on a jury before, and the answer is it makes NO difference what you wear….unfortunately! But I generally make it a point to wear my Doncaster clothes everywhere I go…..so I decided to Get Up. Dress Up. & Show Up….in Doncaster. The first day went pretty much like I expected. It was long, it was boring, I wasn’t picked for a jury….and I was exhausted at the end of the day! The second day went much better! I marched up to the font desk in the jury room, handed over my summons to the No Nonsense jury manager….and she said…You look so pretty! (Imagine my surprise??!!) I was dumbfounded, but I smiled, and said Thank You! Then she went on to say….and, by the way, you looked beautiful yesterday too! Again, I was dumbfounded…and I just said Thank You. But this time I decided to chat it up a bit with her…..she would become my new best friend! Making a long story short, I decided to ask her if I could be excused to have lunch with my husband….and she said YES! And she dismissed me entirely! Hooray! I’m sure it was all because I was dressed up!

Doncaster Wine Capelet

So….the moral of the story is, we have these clothes so why not wear them!? Why do we go to the old, tired looks that we have been wearing forever…when we have pretty, new things in the closet!? When we wear them we discover how to make them valuable to us…these pants, with that jacket…or this one?? Try them both…then wear them each, one day at a time….then decide which is your favorite…or Not!? Which look is better suited to which occasion.

I bet if you try it, you will like it.

This week it’s Showtime!

So Nice!

I had the nicest thing happen to me this morning!FullSizeRender-3

I had a phone call this morning from a fellow we have known for a while now. Lately, he has been hunting me down, as we have been playing phone tag for awhile now…a few days, I think. It seems that he recently met a woman that he thought might like to work with me and know about Doncaster!¬†He proceeded to tell me how he met this lady…she is a friend of friends, they had gone to dinner together with mutual friends. Apparently, she is a beautiful woman, with a fuller figure and she is new to town and was lamenting that she can’t find anywhere to SHOP! So Randy said…I have just the solution for you!

Barbara Drake! Doncaster!

I know she will be able to help you!Fall in Love Fall:M&W small

So we took a minute to talk about my business. Although we have known each other for a few years, at least, we had not had the opportunity to talk about the specifics of my¬†business. Yes…we have all sizes (0 – 24), or sometimes referred to as Petites, Misses, Womens. Yes…the look of the collection is nice clothes, that take most women to at least most of the places they want to go. Yes…some people think the clothes are expensive, and that means that the average price is about $195/piece….and that includes scarves to leather jackets. The average price per pant is about $295, per jacket is probably about $395 and the average price per dress is about $350….yes, some pieces are more than some others…but generally we have clothes that we just WEAR!

W.Fall

Barbara, he said you always look nice!! (How nice!) Well, I almost always wear Doncaster…and because of that I always wear make up and jewelry, and¬†try my best for a good hair day!¬†I try to make it a point to look in the mirror before I go out the door. I’m going for FINE. I just want to look FINE. I have issues, like everyone else does……or worse! But if I feel I look FINE. everything seems to go ok. It’s easier for me to take care of business….pay attention to doing things right the first time. I wear looks that go from the gym, to lunch with friends, to an appointment of some sort….and home (or out!) to dinner with my husband. I want and NEED clothes that will take me to all those places….with out having to change clothes all day long! I expect my clothes to look Fine. all day long and perform for me! And I expect them to be comfortable enough to wear all day long. Because I expect great performance from my wardrobe, I don’t expect to get it for nothing. I suppose if I had no where to go and nothing to do I might be more interested in wearing the cheapest thing I can find…but I don’t. The quality of my life is more important to me….at least at this point in my life….and so is the quality of my clothes.

Not to mention how nice it is to have a gentlemen friend shower me with compliments on any old Saturday morning! And refer new clients my way also.

12809770_10156860588800019_6059617587958894922_n Yesterday I saw some ladies that actually admitted to changing up¬†their closets. I thought I was the only one! Easter is early this year, but still I am going to make a conscious effort to change up my closet right after Easter Dinner with the family. I’m done with maroon / ruby as a bright – I’m going right to Crimson! I might keep some grey, but it will be more like Pearl Grey Silver and Rose or Citrine, instead of Evergreen! Get the picture!?images-2IMG_2716

I might have to hang on to the black for a bit still, but I will be punching it up with some a new crisp White. And then I will add some beautiful…colorful accessories! A pretty scarf, a great statement necklace, a rose colored headband, maybe? Even if the temperature dips a bit, I’m pretty much done with bundling myself up in down! A lighter weight coat has been enough. It’s surprising! A scarf, gloves and a more transitional coat is perfect for Right Now!
